The works on the new gas pipeline started in Playa Flamenca on January 27. The 34.5 kilometre infrastructure, involving an investment of 6 million euros, will bring supplies to the coastal communities of the county of Vega Baja del Segura, benefiting 160,000 residents of the area.

of Valencia's Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Mario Flores, the director general for Energy, Antonio Cejalvo, the councillor for Orihuela Costa, Jose Antonio Aniorte, Gas Natural's Director of Distribution, Daniel López, and the Managing Director of Gas Natural Cegas, José María Gil. The pipeline is one of the priority gas infrastructure projects included in the order issued by the Government of Valencia's Ministry for Infrastructures and Transport on 8 April 2008.
The first 13 kilometre section will bring supplies to Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada. Once this is completed, a second section will be constructed from Orihuela to Guardamar del Segura, helping to boost growth in the towns of Orihuela, Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura. The works are expected to be finished in January 2011.
The Mayoress of Orihuela said that this new infrastructure will surely improve the services in the area and the quality of life of the people from different countries who have decided to move to the Orihuela Costa.
Gas Natural Cegas is Gas Natural's distribution company in the Community of Valencia, where it has been operating for more than 150 years and where over 600,000 customers now benefit from this source of energy.
The company currently supplies natural gas to 171 municipalities and continues to invest strongly in the region to bring natural gas to new areas and to strengthen its existing network across the Autonomous Community.
